Who is this movie intended for? It's often difficult to say. The uncanny valley of intent is an issue here, too. While not everything here works, what does is impressive.
The filmmakers are clearly trying to bring an uncommon maturity to the fantasy film, and in many respects they succeed. From scene to scene, “Mowgli” is eye-popping and undercooked. The disconnect between the artistic wonder of those characters and the rest of Mowgli’s family only distracts.
